I must admit that I am not really a Flickr fan. So when I saw this excercise my first thought was to focus on Fotki instead and evaluate their applications.
But sometimes it is good to step out of one's comfort zone!
Am I glad I did that with Flickr!
After creating my Flickr account I started to investigate Flickr mashups and third party applications. My conclusion: there are many very enthusiastic, creative and dedicated Flickr fans!
I tried the following applications:
PicMarkr Pro: To add watermarks to my photos. At least when someone else uses one's photos one's creative efforts can be protected in some way.
Picknik: A handy photo editor that can be used to improve one's photos.
Bubblr: A application to create comic strips.
Gickr: To create animated Gifs of photos. Ideal when one wants to publish an overview of photo, and space is limited.
Findr Search: A fun way to find photos and to refine it with additional tags. Gives a colourful collage.
Flick Color Picker: Retrieving photos using colour as filter.
MyPicsMap: Linking photos to a Google map using geographic coordinates.
These are just a small selection of applications that can add colour, movement and detail to websites or webblogs. The only way to keep the interest of the younger generation!
I will definitly return to Flickr to incorporate some of their applications in my Fotki website.
