Vision on Web2.0 Thing 9

A library webblog might be a handy way of communicating with the younger library users (15 to 30 years). This age group often disappears from the library radar. Using modern communication and social networking might be a way to reach this group again. Getting input from them in order to improve library and information services.

When all other library users also have access to this webblog may lead to a lively debate and provide ideas for a overall library service.

Library users can add suggestions for books, activities and other services. But they can also get immediate feedback from their peers as well as from the librarians.

An internal webblog can replace the current Front-Office logbook.

One might get ideas about library activities and services when subscribing to the RSS feed from other library’s webblogs. It might improve communication and cooperation between libraries. One can also keep up to date with developments and trends in the field of library services.

The photo editors are a fantastic way to brighten up photos and create professional promotional material. In this digital age people have become more visual inclined and professional looking photos will attract and maybe even keep attention.

One thing that I have certainly realised is that one can easily get stuck in one’s personal comfort zone. Hearing about new developments and trends, but sticking to familiar applications. Maybe intentionally, but more often due to a lack of time. It was great to have the time to focus on the new Web2 applications and possibilities. Reading about it and then actively applying the new information. Great way of tutoring!

Photoshop.com

Adobe Photoshop Express also have an easy to use photo editor on photoshop.com.

I played with extra features like adding post it notes. This feature can be use for creating photos to publish on introduction material for new library users.

Photo Editors

There is a choice of varying online photo editors available. I tried Picnik a photo editor linked to photos in Flickr account. Easy to use, edit and save.

Also tried the editor at Fotoaanpassen.nl. No sign on required and easy to use.

Web2 Badges

A collection of eye-catching badges. Avaliable in various shapes and colours with the possibility to add one's own text. Will certainly attract attention when published on a website or presentation.

Fototrix.com

An easy to use online photo editor. Adding text or animation figures, changing colours or perfecting photos

Image Generator.com

The first feature that I have tried was "Scrapbook generator". Followed the instructions, uploaded the photo, changed the settings and applied. No scrapbook page was created. I tried this with jpeg and bmp format images, without success. My conclusion: Probably something wrong with their templates.

Bighugelabs Pop Art Poster

Another colourful poster idea!

Bighugelabs Billboard

The billboard can be used as a poster to promote a special event or activity.

Bighugelabs Cube

The cube was created by uploading six photos.

This cube can be used as promotional material. It can also be used as part of a childrens library activity. Children get the print-out, some cryons to decorate and then they have to cut it out, fold it and glue it together.

FD's Flickr Toys

FD's Flickr toys were next. I was redirected to the site of Bighugelabs, with endless possibilities. I choose to make Cubes, Billboards an Pop Art Posters.

Directions were easy to follow, linking to Flickr photo account went well and the results very professional.

Neoformix

My first image generator was Neoformix where I made a Wordheart.

It is a java application , created with Processing, an open source programming language.

I used the words "Journey, Discovery, Librarian, Travelling" and the wordheart was then automatically generated.

Online Photo Editing Thing 8

Thing 8 = FUN! POSSIBILITIES! CREATIVITY!

Playing with image generators are fun. Structurally playing with image generators even more so. Learning about the possiblities and getting the opportunity to apply them added to my knowledge base and to my online photo editing abbilities.

Browsing through the Generator Blog gave me a better idea of possibilities and then it was time to get to work!

Discovering Flickr Thing 7

I must admit that I am not really a Flickr fan. So when I saw this excercise my first thought was to focus on Fotki instead and evaluate their applications.

But sometimes it is good to step out of one's comfort zone!

Am I glad I did that with Flickr!

After creating my Flickr account I started to investigate Flickr mashups and third party applications. My conclusion: there are many very enthusiastic, creative and dedicated Flickr fans!

I tried the following applications:
PicMarkr Pro: To add watermarks to my photos. At least when someone else uses one's photos one's creative efforts can be protected in some way.

Picknik: A handy photo editor that can be used to improve one's photos.

Bubblr: A application to create comic strips.

Gickr: To create animated Gifs of photos. Ideal when one wants to publish an overview of photo, and space is limited.

Findr Search: A fun way to find photos and to refine it with additional tags. Gives a colourful collage.

Flick Color Picker: Retrieving photos using colour as filter.

MyPicsMap: Linking photos to a Google map using geographic coordinates.

These are just a small selection of applications that can add colour, movement and detail to websites or webblogs. The only way to keep the interest of the younger generation!

I will definitly return to Flickr to incorporate some of their applications in my Fotki website.

Bubblr Comic Strips

Browsing through the list of Flickr third party apllications I came across Bubblr.

With Bubblr one can easily create comic strips.

I used Bubblr to create a description of a fun book promotion activity for Valentine's Day, by Eindhoven Public Library.
Blind Date with a Book by Journey of Discovery ** made with Bubblr (PIMPAMPUM)

Clanwilliam Public Library South Africa

A small public library in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. Very limited collection of books, many dated books especially in the information section, no internet fascilities, not even a computer for simple word processing. Managed by a team of enthusiastic librarians, encouraging the love for reading and importance of literacy under the community. Very inspiring!

Saami Parliament Library Karasjok Norway

I visited the Saami Parliament Building in Karasjok, Norway and was pleasantly surprised by the combination of traditional Saami architecture with modern information technology. Thousands of little lamps hanging from the ceiling represent the stars of the northern sky.

The book collection represent a total overview of all books printed in the Saami language. Varying from information books, novels, children's literature and official government documentation.

An interesting place to enjoy modern fascilities including free internet, while being surrounded by traditional Saami art.

Flickr Photo Hosting Thing 6

Photo hosting is one of the fun functions of the internet. Every photographer has a favourite photo hosting site. My personal favourite is Fotki. I have been using Fotki for 5 years. The site has grown in numbers as well as in quality of the various features.

I have opted for an evaluation of Flickr

I have used my excisting Yahoo e-mail adres for registering a website on Flickr.

A registration wizard guided me through every step in order to set up an account and to create a profile. Uploading of photos went smoothly. It wasn't necessary to download additional software.

Creating of photo sets, tagging and mapping of photos are familiar practices.

Adding a photo to a blog via a photo hosting service was new experience. Instructions were clear and easy to follow. This would certainly be an advantage when hosting a professional website when time is limited.

RSS Feed Search Thing 5

All of us have a few favourite websites that we access on a regular base. The RSS Feed icons provide an opportunity for easy access to these websites.

It is also necessary to keep up to date to developments on other websites that we are not so familiar with.

Using Google Blogsearch I found several blogs activities promoting "Oeroeg", the selected book for Nederland Leest 2009. These blog results can be sorted by date. After doing so I chose the Bieb Blog of Vlissingen and added their RSS Feed icon to my list of Libraries on Netvibes.

Doing so completing the excercises for Thing 5!

Netvibes

Netvibes was suggested as RSS Feed reader. Easy to use! Includes adding, managing and cancelling updates.

This is a screenprint of my RSS Feed overview with three tabs: General, Libraries and Travelling.

Really Simple Syndication RSS Feed Thing 4

Just completed Thing 4 and 5, the excercises on RSS FEEDS.

My first experience with RSS feed was in a simular way than the more familiar "Favourites".

Adding the URL's of websites to the list of feeds under the Favourites botton.

After viewing the trainings video, a new world opened up. RSS Feeds can be collected and managed from one single point of access.

I have chosen Netvibes for this access.

Registering a Netvibes account and then adding categories or tabs. For a start I have chosen two tabs: General and Libraries. The third one will certainly be Travelling.

I then visited the website of Bibliotheek Best and added the short cut obtained from the orange RSS icon and

Followed by a RSS Feed for 23Dingen.nl and the recommended Biblioblogs of the NDB.

RSS Feeds will certainly save me lots of time when browsing my favourite websites in future.

Socialising Thing 3

I found the webblogs of my colleagues and registered as a follower on three webblogs.

I have also found a handy link where I can send messages to friends or colleagues. So I have send some invitations. Now just waiting for them to respond.

Before I could publish a message I was asked for a word verification. Very difficult! I can never make out what these words are! Maybe a pair of glasses will help?

Also added to my Profile: a photo and a some additional information, like my interests, choice in movies and location.

I have also stumbled on the next "Thing", namely RSS feeds! So already signed up on one RSS feed of my one collegue's webblog.

Yes, "stumbled"! Now off to find the RSS feed in a structured way ...

Weblog Thing 2

After registering an e-mail account I created a webblog:

Journey of Discovery!

I then published my first messages. Easy enough. Layout was clear and easy to use.

The fun part of keeping a webblog or social website is inviting and connecting to friends. Hardly any fun if one writes and writes and publishes and publishes and there is no one reading these logs or commenting.

So the next step will be to find friends. I need to add them to my contact list. I also would like to join their webblogs.

E-Mailing

Opening a new e-mail account. Gmail was suggested.

My experience?

Exactly the same as opening a e-mail account with any other provider: MSN, Hotmail or Yahoo.

It is getting more difficult to register a unique username. My first e-mail address dating back to 1998 contained my name and surname. Now I have to use an abbreviation of my name and surname adding a number to it in order to get a recognizable username.

First thing accomplished!

Glimpse on 23 things

This afternoon I have had a glimpse on what the "23 things" are!

It is a fun way of updating general knowledge about the 23 latest developments on the internet. Focussing on the possibilities for communication and marketing via social networks.

Blogging, e-mailing, sharing photos, wiki's, linking/bookmarking, microblogging (or Twittering), podcasting and videocasting to name just a few applications.

Some people might laugh at this list? Their first thought? So what's new?

If they stop and think for a minute they might realise that they belong to the lucky few in the world who are literate and fortunate enough to have the latest technology at the tip of their fingers.

Most of the inhabitants of this planet if still relying on traditional ways of communication.

A small percentage of the inhabitants of this planet might be familiar with some of the modern ways of communication.

So join me on this Journey of Discovery ...

Welcome to my Journey of Discovery

I received an invitation to attend a course on "23 things"!

Interesting title, but what are these 23 things?

Time to explore and discover ...
